أ) وفق قاعدة حاصل الضرب: \(g'(x)=e^xf(x)+e^xf'(x)=e^x\big(f(x)+f'(x)\big)=e^x\cdot e^x=e^{2x}\).

\[f(x)=\frac{g(x)}{e^x}=\tfrac12e^x+Ce^{-x}.\]

ج) الشرط \(f(-x)=f(x)\): \(\tfrac12e^{-x}+Ce^{x}=\tfrac12e^x+Ce^{-x}\)، أي \(\big(C-\tfrac12\big)\big(e^x-e^{-x}\big)=0\) لكلّ \(x\). إذن \(C=\tfrac12\) و

\[f(x)=\frac{e^x+e^{-x}}{2}.\]

ح) \(f'(x)=\frac{e^x-e^{-x}}{2}\)، لذا

\[f^2-(f')^2=\frac{(e^x+e^{-x})^2-(e^x-e^{-x})^2}{4}=\frac{4e^x e^{-x}}{4}=1.\]

خ) الشرط \(f(-x)=-f(x)\): \(\tfrac12e^{-x}+Ce^{x}=-\tfrac12e^x-Ce^{-x}\)، أي \(\big(C+\tfrac12\big)\big(e^x+e^{-x}\big)=0\).

\[f(x)=\frac{e^x-e^{-x}}{2}.\]

\(\blacksquare\)

(א) לפי כלל המכפלה: \(g'(x)=e^xf(x)+e^xf'(x)=e^x\big(f(x)+f'(x)\big)=e^x\cdot e^x=e^{2x}\).

\[f(x)=\frac{g(x)}{e^x}=\tfrac12e^x+Ce^{-x}.\]

(ה) התנאי \(f(-x)=f(x)\): \(\tfrac12e^{-x}+Ce^{x}=\tfrac12e^x+Ce^{-x}\), כלומר \(\big(C-\tfrac12\big)\big(e^x-e^{-x}\big)=0\) לכל \(x\). לכן \(C=\tfrac12\) ו־

\[f(x)=\frac{e^x+e^{-x}}{2}.\]

(ו) \(f'(x)=\frac{e^x-e^{-x}}{2}\), לכן

\[f^2-(f')^2=\frac{(e^x+e^{-x})^2-(e^x-e^{-x})^2}{4}=\frac{4e^x e^{-x}}{4}=1.\]

(ז) התנאי \(f(-x)=-f(x)\): \(\tfrac12e^{-x}+Ce^{x}=-\tfrac12e^x-Ce^{-x}\), כלומר \(\big(C+\tfrac12\big)\big(e^x+e^{-x}\big)=0\).

\[f(x)=\frac{e^x-e^{-x}}{2}.\]

\(\blacksquare\)

A challenge problem · Calculus

A function plus its derivative equals eˣ

A small equation, a whole family of functions, and two famous ones

We are looking for a function which, added to its own derivative, gives \(e^x\). It looks as if this needs "differential equations", which are not taught at school — but one clever trick puts the whole problem within reach of an advanced high-school student.

The problem

Advanced level · Calculus

A twice-differentiable function \(f(x)\) satisfies, for every \(x\):

\[f(x)+f'(x)=e^x.\]
  1. (a) Define \(g(x)=e^x f(x)\). Show that \(g'(x)=e^{2x}\).
  2. (b) Deduce that every function satisfying the condition has the form \(f(x)=\tfrac12e^x+Ce^{-x}\), where \(C\) is a constant.
  3. (c) Check that every function of this form does satisfy the condition.
  4. (d) Prove that \(f''(x)=f(x)\) for every function satisfying the condition.
  5. (e) Find the even function \(f\) that satisfies the condition.
  6. (f) For the function found in (e): prove that \(f^2(x)-\big(f'(x)\big)^2=1\) for every \(x\), and find its minimum value.

***

  1. (g) Is there an odd function satisfying the condition? If so, find it.
Hint for (a)

Differentiate \(g\) with the product rule and take \(e^x\) out as a common factor. What do you know about \(f(x)+f'(x)\)?

Hint for (b)

Two functions with equal derivatives differ by a constant. Find one function whose derivative is \(e^{2x}\), then go back from \(g\) to \(f\).

Hint for (g)

Write the condition \(f(-x)=-f(x)\) for the form \(\tfrac12e^x+Ce^{-x}\) and compare the coefficients of \(e^x\) and \(e^{-x}\) on both sides.

Full solution (try it yourself first!)

(a) By the product rule: \(g'(x)=e^xf(x)+e^xf'(x)=e^x\big(f(x)+f'(x)\big)=e^x\cdot e^x=e^{2x}\).

(b) The function \(\tfrac12e^{2x}\) also has derivative \(e^{2x}\), so \(g(x)\) and \(\tfrac12e^{2x}\) differ by a constant: \(g(x)=\tfrac12e^{2x}+C\). Dividing by \(e^x\ne0\):

\[f(x)=\frac{g(x)}{e^x}=\tfrac12e^x+Ce^{-x}.\]

So there are no other solutions: every solution has this form.

(c) \(f'(x)=\tfrac12e^x-Ce^{-x}\), so \(f(x)+f'(x)=\tfrac12e^x+Ce^{-x}+\tfrac12e^x-Ce^{-x}=e^x\). ✓ The condition determines exactly a one-parameter family of functions.

(d) Differentiate both sides of the condition: \(f'(x)+f''(x)=e^x\). Subtract the original condition \(f(x)+f'(x)=e^x\) to get \(f''(x)-f(x)=0\), i.e. \(f''=f\). (Or directly from the form: \(f''(x)=\tfrac12e^x+Ce^{-x}=f(x)\).)

(e) The condition \(f(-x)=f(x)\) reads \(\tfrac12e^{-x}+Ce^{x}=\tfrac12e^x+Ce^{-x}\), i.e. \(\big(C-\tfrac12\big)\big(e^x-e^{-x}\big)=0\) for all \(x\). Hence \(C=\tfrac12\) and

\[f(x)=\frac{e^x+e^{-x}}{2}.\]

(f) \(f'(x)=\frac{e^x-e^{-x}}{2}\), so

\[f^2-(f')^2=\frac{(e^x+e^{-x})^2-(e^x-e^{-x})^2}{4}=\frac{4e^x e^{-x}}{4}=1.\]

\(f'(x)=0\) only when \(e^x=e^{-x}\), i.e. \(x=0\); \(f'\) is negative to the left of 0 and positive to the right, so the minimum value is \(f(0)=1\). (The identity also shows it: \(f^2=1+(f')^2\ge1\).)

(g) The condition \(f(-x)=-f(x)\) reads \(\tfrac12e^{-x}+Ce^{x}=-\tfrac12e^x-Ce^{-x}\), i.e. \(\big(C+\tfrac12\big)\big(e^x+e^{-x}\big)=0\). Hence \(C=-\tfrac12\), and the odd function exists:

\[f(x)=\frac{e^x-e^{-x}}{2}.\]

Notice: the even and the odd function we found are each other's derivatives, and their sum is \(e^x\). \(\blacksquare\)

Beyond the problem

The two functions from (e) and (g) have special names: the hyperbolic cosine \(\cosh x=\frac{e^x+e^{-x}}{2}\) and the hyperbolic sine \(\sinh x=\frac{e^x-e^{-x}}{2}\). The identity you proved in (f), \(\cosh^2x-\sinh^2x=1\), resembles the familiar \(\cos^2x+\sin^2x=1\) — with a minus sign. Just as the point \((\cos t,\sin t)\) lies on the circle \(x^2+y^2=1\), the point \((\cosh t,\sinh t)\) lies on the hyperbola \(x^2-y^2=1\) — hence the name.

The graph of \(\cosh x\) is more familiar than it seems: it is the shape of a chain or rope hanging from its two ends, called the catenary.

And the trick in (a) — multiplying by \(e^x\) — is no accident: it is the general method for any condition of the form \(f+f'=h(x)\). Try it, for example, on \(f(x)+f'(x)=1\).
